Speaker Text
Everett Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 in 20, the Watch Clicker podcast with your host Everett and my good friend, Will. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Will, how are you?
Will It has been a hot minute since I've been on the show.A long time, I think.
Everett Yeah, I was thinking about that. Was it the last time you were on the show? Was that when Andrew and I both had COVID?
Will I think so, which is not not the greatest, but also I have COVID.Right.We decided to invite you back.Yeah, when I when I had at least I'm a week and a half out of it this time.So I'm on the mend. But the listeners might have to deal with the occasional cough and sniffle.
Everett that I think they're going to be fine. They're really patient, kind people, almost, almost to a man or woman. So you got COVID on a cruise.
Will I did.Well, I'm assuming I got it on the cruise.I don't see anywhere else where I could have got it because I tested positive the day after I got back.So probably somewhere in the middle of the cruise, someone on the elevator sneezed on me.And that was that.
Everett As Andrew described it on the Royal Covidian cruise line.
Will Yep, exactly. It's a new cruise line.Uh, that's where you go to get all your illnesses out of the way.
Everett So, but you're, you're recovering well, I understand.
Will Yeah, thankfully, uh, just a couple of days of, you know, real bad cold, got a sinus infection on top of it, but other than that, not too bad.
Everett And most importantly, did you make it through the cruise without feeling sick?
Will Oh, yeah. That was the best part is at least we got it the day after we got back. But the cruise itself, everybody was in perfect health. We had sunshine every day, not a drop of rain until literally we were getting off the boat.
Everett Does anybody at your work believe you're ill and are people suspecting that you're quiet, quiet quitting? Is this what we call quiet quitting?
Will Yeah. You know, it's funny.Almost everybody that I talked to, um, cause I, I took, I worked on the day after the day after I got back and then I took a sick day, the day after that. And everybody was like, Oh yeah, well you were just on a cruise. So of course you have COVID.
Everett Right.Oh, so they, they all were like, yeah, Will's got COVID.
Will Yeah, it was expected. There were people before I left that were like, oh, you're probably going to get COVID, right?I was like, uh, thanks.Being real, real helpful here.
Everett Dude, that is, that's awful that, that we just know.
Will Yeah, you know, I, it's, I guess it's just the risk you take if you want to take a vacation like that, because you're in a confined area, right? You know, I mean, you get out off the boat on excursions and stuff and you do all that, but I mean, you know, the days and nights you're on the boat, you're, packed in with a couple thousand people and someone's got to have it.
Everett Yeah.Well, fortunately here we are in October of 2023 and it feels like the risks of COVID are manageable and people generally know like how to quarantine.
Will So yeah, exactly.Probably just one of those things we're going to have to deal with and that's all right. As long as Not many people are dying from it.I think we'll be okay.
Everett Yeah, I think, I think I agree with that.Uh, for my part, I'm doing really well.I went to Seattle this last weekend with my son.We watched two Mariners baseball games. One of them was absolutely incredible. The other one was a little harder.Mariners were eliminated at that second game from playoffs, which kind of stung, but it was really cool to be up there for that. Um, we had a great time. It's the first time I've traveled alone with West. He's 10 now.And man, we just had a blast. We flew up, took like a water taxi in the downtown Seattle. You, I sent you a picture of that and you asked me if I, how long the trip from Oregon to Seattle took in a boat.
Will I was stuck on, I was stuck on boats and long trips on them. That's why.
Everett We did fly into Seattle, but then thereafter took a water taxi, which is kind of a cool thing. It's a cool idea, right?Um, it's, it's, it feels like a barge, but it's smaller than that. You know, I think folks in New York are familiar with these or places where you have bodies of water.I've never been on anything like that. So, and, and same for West.It was pretty fun.Like, Oh, we're going to get on this boat and ride for 10 minutes like commuters. That was a cool, never done that before.
Will Yeah, I remember doing that when my parents would take me into the city when I was a kid, we would take the ferry across into New York. And I remember the first time I went, I was like, this is unbelievably cool.
Everett Right.I felt a little bit that way as an adult and not even as a child. So, yeah, it's a neat thing.
Will Yeah.
Everett And, you know, and we did all the things we went to the to Pike Place Market and went to the Space Needle and saw him throwing salmon at Pike Place and showed Wes the first Starbucks, which I think that was the most mind blowing thing of the whole trip.
Will Yeah.Yeah.Is that one unionized?
Everett Yeah, I don't know.I didn't think to go in and ask. There's always like a six block line, which I just think is absurd.I mean, I can, I can appreciate wanting to be inside, but it's like, this is not, the 16th Chapel and the coffee inside is exactly the same as the coffee at that one two blocks away that doesn't have a line.Yeah.
Will So maybe they have some special, you know, first Starbucks blend, but it's probably just the same as something else that else that they make, you know, right.
Everett And you're at, you're at Pike place market. So do you get anything besides Pike place?I don't know.Right, right. But yeah, he, his mind was blown.I, you know, he's seen in his life, he's, been alive for 10 years. He's probably seen a thousand different Starbucks stores, right? So that was particularly mind blowing for him.
Will Yeah.Yeah, absolutely. And it's, it's good because this, this all kind of fits in with what our theme of the show is today, which is travel.
Everett Yeah, that's right. We're going to, we're going to talk about, travel watches today. You and I were talking about what we wanted to talk about tonight, and you having come off your cruise and me having come back from Seattle, we both had some thoughts about what we want in a travel watch. But we're going to pause because there were some releases in the last week that we thought kind of fit in with the theme. And so I think this might be a bit of a new format. for the show that we're gonna look at in the coming weeks.By the way, Andrew will be back.Andrew's having an off week. He's still alive. Will has volunteered to step in for at least a week, but Andrew will be back. But yeah, a bit of a new format. We're gonna do some roundup of releases, but kind of with a theme, right?A bit of a theme and get to a topic. So both topical episode and roundup episode today.Try it out.If you've got thoughts, let us know. But yeah, in any event, we're talking about watches. And to that end, we both had a couple of drops that we're excited about on this theme of travel watch. Will, do you mind kicking this off?
Will Yeah, absolutely.I'll kick it off with the Zodiac Worn and Wound Super Seawolf Laser Tag Limited Edition.Bit of a mouthful. but I'm sure everybody saw this.Um, you know, worn and wound does these limited editions with, uh, different brands, you know, a few, few times a year at this point, but these laser tag ones, I thought were just cool because I loved laser tag as a kid.Um, I still would waiting for my kids to get a little bit older and I can take them to laser tag and dominate all the other kids.Um, but, uh, that said, I mean, these look like you would imagine a laser tag watch to look like.I mean, it's all neon colors, bright, that kind of nineties color scheme, all that aesthetic going on.And I thought these fit into this, this travel theme for a couple of reasons.Um, I think the most obvious one is that it's a dive watch, right?I think everybody thinks of traveling. You're going to go somewhere usually tropical or somewhere nautical where you're going to go in the pool, go in the ocean. You're going to want to watch that has some water resistance.Everybody thinks of a dive watch. We'll get to that in a minute. But the other thing, um, that I, that I thought about really fit in with these is that funky color scheme.I mean, these are quirky as most of worn and wounds, uh, collaborations are.Um, but this is something fun that you would want to wear on vacation. You know, like who cares you throw on your Caribbean shirt with a bunch of parrots on it.And this Zodiac, with neon colors, who cares? It looks awesome, right?Yeah. That's kind of where I think these would fit in really well.I don't know that I'd be wearing these to the office, not that I go to an office, I work from home, but I think these fit in on that weekend vibe kind of thing. If you're traveling, just fun situations, I think this is where these fit in perfectly.
Everett Yeah, these are kind of wild.I mean, They are, for all intents and purposes, just a super seawolf, right? So this is a watch that Zodiac has released at this point in a dozen, maybe 20 different iterations. And I think Andrew has expressed some disdain over iterative watch releases.I'm probably less inclined to dislike that on theory, but it bears mentioning these are just super seawolves, but they're really different than anything I've ever seen before with the dial, kind of what I'd call it like a spider web type of deal on the dial and these lines extending out.Tons of different colors. These are wild.My one criticism about the press release of these is that all the photos are so dark.I think with the express intent of showing off the wild and really cool loom on both of these, But because the backgrounds are also dark, it's a little bit tough to determine what this thing looks like in full light, which most people are going to be wearing this in full light all the time.
Will Yes.I think the other thing too that I know they're laser tag, but I almost wish that they had leaned into the Tron vibe a little bit more because these definitely I could see If a Tron legacy had come out this year, I could see these watches being prop pieces for that movie. You know, that's kind of the vibe that they're giving off.
Everett Right.Yeah.A bit of that like vintage eighties, seventies, eighties feel, but with this super rad, brightly colored watch.
Will Yeah. And there's also, I'm pretty sure that there's also loom on the case itself. It looks like on the top of the lugs and the sides of the case too, which is pretty cool.
Everett What?So I know what you're talking about. You're saying that is a line of loom.
Will I'm pretty sure that it is.I'm looking through the pictures again, and I am 99% sure that that is a line of loom on the case, which looks and on the case side.
Everett Yeah, I'm seeing a picture now. That is fucking insane.I looked through this and I haven't noticed that.
Will Yeah, that's insane.
Everett I like that.I mean, I've never seen anything like that.
Will Yeah, it's pretty well.Yeah, the loomed crowns are probably the closest you get, which this has.But the one on the side of the case is really cool. That's what made me think of Tron.
Everett Dude, these are incredible. So 82 pieces of each on sale October 30th on the Worn and Wound website.
Will They are not, although it says add to cart. Oh, you can buy it now, but they're shipping in early November. So it looks like they're for sale. Not yet sold out.So if this is your jam, it looks like they're available.
Everett Oh, excuse me.I jumped the gun here.OK, so both watches will be available in a limited run of 282 pieces of each color.200 pieces will be available today, which was September 28.So so last week, it seems like they have not run out of the 200 But they're making an additional 82 pieces available on October 30th.Hmm.
Will There we go.Yeah.And these are total prices.Hundred bucks.Fifteen.
Everett Yeah.Fifteen.Ninety five, which is, I think, pretty close to what a Super Seawolf goes for.
Will Yeah, that's that's their MSRP.I had a Super Seawolf.I got it on a Black Friday deal a few years ago for a lot less than that. But it was I think the Super Seawolf
Everett three which looks a little bit different than these um but same case style right and they're all like 1400 1500 msrp right yeah yeah i'm looking at the zio 92 17 12 95 here's one for a thousand so yeah i mean i think it depends which one you want where you're getting it from here's a one of the green 9305s for $1,000.So yeah, between $1,000 and $1,600 for these. So as cool as this is, you're not getting gouged at all for what's really pretty unique.
Will Especially with the cool loom.
Everett Yeah.
Will If that's your jam.
Everett So what do you got, Everett?
Will What's your first one?
Everett Yeah, there was a drop that came out a couple of days ago from Certina. Sertina is not a watch I talk about a lot or that even we talk about on the show a lot.I think I'm comfortable saying that Sertina is an underappreciated brand. We're talking about a Swatch Group brand. So, you know, this is the Sertina DS7 Powermatic 80, debuted last week.Yeah, these are nice. This is an integrated 70s integrated bracelet, 70s style steel sports watch.I feel like that is the way we start about 90% of the new drops we talk about in the last two years. And just like the last three or four times we've talked about this, I'm gonna say this watch looks different. It looks, A, it looks the same as everything else and B, it looks different. And I think that there are some things about this that might make it an option. So this is a 39 millimeter watch, integrated bracelet, butterfly, 36 millimeter dropping in, uh, you know, six, seven months, most likely almost certainly.Right.You know, we're not, um, and, and, you know, It has a Powermatic 80, which is very similar to another Swatch Group brand who's got a fairly prolific integrated steel sports watch on the market today.Water resistance to 100, super-luminova, and 800 bucks, right?Or I think 850 bucks, something like that.
Will Yeah, whatever the Swiss franc conversion is these days.I think it's about one to one in the dollar, pretty close.I like these. so much more than the PRX.
Everett Tell me why.I've got some thoughts, but why do you like this, Biller?
Will So in keeping in line with our theming of this show, I tried on a PRX for the first time on the cruise ship. They actually had a pretty good watch store on the boat and they had a PRX there and I tried it on.I tried on both the regular I think it's 39 or 40, whatever the regular one is.And then they had the smaller 35 millimeter.I didn't like either of them.Um, I, I, I thought the, the case shape, the taggable case shape was kind of weird or hexagonal, whatever it is.I forget.Um, but I like the way that this looks circular.I feel like it fits the integrated look. a little bit better in a more contemporary sense.Like the PRX is obviously leaning back, right?A little bit more vintage inspired. This is kind of combining the two.Um, I just think it, I don't know, it looks, maybe it's the lack of a pattern dial too. They've got plain dials, um, in like a powder blue, black and white or silver, whatever that is.
Everett Yeah.
Will It just looks cleaner overall.I don't know.I just, if I was going to buy one, of, you know, an integrated bracelet in that kind of theme.I think I'd probably go for this one, especially over PRX, but I'd be interested to see how it fits because PRX wears big because of the the case shape.
Everett Yeah, well, actually, so I let you go first because I thought we could differentiate, but but I think we're exactly on the same page, so I like the I like the taper from the case to the bracelet. on this more than the PRX.So the PRX, you've got that really slow taper, which makes the top of the bracelet pretty wide. The same phenomenon exists with Brew watches oftentimes.Yeah.And it's always something that slightly irritated me about Brew, and it irritates me with the PRX, but that top portion of the bracelet is so wide, and you don't really get that sleek and sudden transition to the bracelet. This doesn't have that phenomenon. And I'm totally with you, smooth dial versus textured dial all day.I've never been a huge fan of the textured dials. It doesn't matter the watch. So this actually does it for me.I do think it's going to wear big.I don't think it's going to wear as big as a PRX.
Will Yeah.I don't, I don't think so.I'm trying to find the thickness.Oh, here we go.Oh dang.This thing's only 10 millimeters thick.That's right.
Everett That's right.
Will That's what's a PRX.I'm going to look it up.
Everett I think they're like, I think they're like 11.
Will They are 11.So it's a smidge thinner. And I wonder if that would make the difference.Cause that was part of what I didn't like about it is it's, it's kind of tall because of the integrated lugs.Um, lug to lug.I mean, you know, you can call it that. But the it felt like thick on the wrist.
Everett Yeah.Well, and that's always been my that's always been my reservation with watches like this, the sort of lower and steel sports watches. You just get a thickness that I find unacceptable.I will say addition in addition to the in addition to that thickness. So I think the PRX is actually just a little bit more than 11, a little bit thicker than 11.The, the, this, the Sertina is actually a little bit less than 10.I know that sounds pedantic or persnickety, but it's sick. That's a significant difference. We're talking about over a millimeters of difference makes a difference. And at under a thousand bucks, I think the Sertina is competing in terms of thickness with the likes of Manta. with the likes of Form X, you know, watches that really didn't have any competition in this class.
Will I mean, just to make a point on the thickness difference, for my Speedmaster, I bought one of those aftermarket sapphire case backs that are actually thinner than the regular steel case back by, I think, a quarter of a millimeter.Which watch is this?My Speedmaster.
Everett Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Will And that little tiny bit made me enjoy the watch so much more because it just sits a little bit lower on the wrist. So, I mean, even that small amount can make a big difference. So I'd be interested to try one of these on.The thing that stinks is finding somewhere that you can actually try on a Sertina because I think part of the reason we don't hear too much from them is because I swear it was Sertina that was not did not have an authorized dealer in the US until I think two or three years ago when Hodinkee started selling them.Yeah, I think you're right.I'm pretty sure it was Sertina and that's why you just don't see them.I think they were, you were able to get them on the gray market.Um, but AD wise, I think they were more difficult to come by.I think they're sold in a few places now, Hodinkee and maybe, um, Teddy Baldessari somewhere else online too.I think you can get them, but I don't know of any,
Everett Brick and mortar that have all the sorry Amazon, but no, no brick and mortar representation still.
Will Yeah.
Everett Yeah.Purse or tune of the website.
Will Yeah. We're going to need that swatch hookup to get one in for review.
Everett That's right.Well, I guess, I guess kind of leave it at that because it is what it is, right? This is not a watch. That's going to blow your mind. The movements of powermatic, uh, the finishing is probably going to be very, very close to anything else you're going to get from swatch group at this level.Uh, butterfly class that, that might be a deal breaker for some of you, but a different case shape and a much thinner watch than you're getting with the PRX for, for me, I'm probably inclined to go for that, to go for this just for that reason alone.Right.
Will Yeah.
Everett Yeah. And, and a hundred meters of water resistance.Right.So, so no Delta there.
Will So my next one is, if you were going to, if you were going to make this a travel watch, this would be a pretty big flex for a travel watch, but go look it up and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's the, it's a collective horology limited edition with Montblanc, um, which, uh, is called the 1858 Minerva Manapusha Chronograph Blue Arrow. So this has a Minerva movement in it, I gather, based on the name. And this is obviously a monopusher, and the dial looks like white enamel-ish, maybe?Yeah, it looks enamel to me.Yeah, yeah. It's got blue accents, black numerals, and then the sub-dials are like a light yellow kind of color. Just reminds me of something you might see in the Caribbean on one of those old sea charts. The color scheme reminds me of that, which is what made me lean towards this travel aesthetic for this. Now, it is something I will never own because it's a limited edition of 30 priced at $34,500 each.Have fun getting one of those. I'm a sucker for a monopusher.I wish there were more of them. They seem to be coming out a little bit more these days. But this thing just looks really good. The case shape looks fantastic. It's got a monopusher, which I like because if I could have it my way, every chronograph I own would be a monopusher because I don't need the start, stop, reset to be different.I don't time things that way when I do use a chronograph.
Everett I've never actually used a monopusher. That's not true.I have once, but… So the way this works, you press it once, you press it again. When you press it, you have to hold it that second time to get it to reset, right?
Will So the ones that I've used are you press it once to start it, you press it twice to stop it, and then the third time you press it, it resets. So for anybody who's not familiar with the traditional coronagraph, that's got two pushers. You can start and stop it as many times as you want using the pusher on the top.You just keep starting and stopping. If you want to reset it, you stop it.And then you press the push on the bottom to reset it.The reason I like mono pushers is because I'm usually not starting and stopping multiple times.I'm just starting. And then when I'm done, I hit reset, or if I want to start something over, I'm, you know, I don't need to start and stop multiple times, which is why I like them. They're just very simple, um, in, in their operation. I wish that there were more of them.I really like this one.I wish it wasn't $30,000 cause I'd be all over it.Um, right. You know, but I could totally see wearing this thing out on the beach. If you're not going in the water, just chilling time and how long your kids take to, you know, get sucked out by the riptide.
Everett So supposedly this thing is, was inspired by a Minerva yacht timer that was viewed at Eric Wynn's shop in New York, which I think is interesting.I'm on Mercari right now looking at a very similar yacht timer for 200 bucks.
Will Okay, tell me about it.I'm going to go look at it right now.
Everett I'm going to send this to you.OK, I'm texting it to you now.OK, perfect.
Will So I'm going to I'm going to look at this and maybe make a purchase on the phone here.
Everett But I've seen the one I've seen the one from Eric Wynn's Wynn Vintage is is still there.I can't tell, but it looks like this one's not in quite as good a shape as that. But yeah, it's literally 200 bucks.
Will Oh, this is very cool. It's a stopwatch, right? This one you're talking about stopwatch.
Everett Yeah, the one I just sent you.
Will Yeah.So if anybody wants, I'm not going to buy it, but if anybody wants to look it up, if you go on Mercari and type in vintage Minerva yachting stopwatch, it might still be there.Yeah, it is very cool.I would definitely check it out.
Everett So the difference between this one and the one that was available with vintage, the one I went vintage, I think was in slightly better shape, the dial and the crystal, but it comes in this plastic case and the wind vintage one looked flawless. And this one is, is pretty worse for the wear.
Will But as you would expect from the wind vintage one.
Everett That's right. The movement, the actual watch on this one looks flawless. The movement looks totally clean and perfect.Uh, yeah, this is, this is interesting.Uh, anyway, Uh, we got sidetracked.Yes, this is a beautiful watch. It costs way too much money for me.
Will Yeah, sure does.
Everett Montblanc, Montblanc.I think that they actually started collaborating with Minerva.I don't know, a dozen years ago or so, but I, I think that they're still selling primarily Solita watches. So it's interesting. It like maybe they have two lines, like a Minerva line and a Baseline like a Salida or a ETA.I think yeah, we're originally ETA watches, right?
Will I think Mont Blanc's one of those brands that Has a very large scale in their pricing I think they have things that are relatively affordable and then I think they also go up to this you know this level of you know $30,000 I could be wrong because I don't pay attention to them too much but Um, right. They're not really sounds right to me.
Everett They don't really feel like a, uh, an enthusiast brand to me.
Will No.Yeah, they're.Oh, you can get the wire pricing available.See below, man.Uh, this is a 42 millimeter watch by the way, in case anybody was interested. So this'll, this'll stand out.
Everett It seems like the, the smaller watch trend hasn't completely. enveloped the whole horology scene the way it has, you know, micro brands and affordables, right? These higher end 30, $40,000 watches are still coming in pretty big.Because if you're going to spend $40,000 on a watch, you want everybody to see it.
Will So I'm looking at the specs for this watch and on the case, it says that It has an 18-karat white gold bi-directional rotating bezel, which this has like a fluted bezel. It actually looks more like the one on the Omega Globemasters.I don't know why it rotates unless it spins something inside or- I'm thinking it must spin the telemeter.Yes, it must.I think it does.I'm looking at it.It looks like there's something on the top of the crystal. That, yeah, maybe.I don't know. That's interesting though.I've never seen that.Yeah, bi-directional blue timing arrow. So that's what that is.It doesn't spin the telemeter. It spins the arrow which aligns to the telemeter.
Everett Uh-huh.Uh-huh.Okay.That's cool.I wonder, it just sort of sits on top. It's not a complication.
Will Everett, this totally justifies the price.I totally get it now.I'm going to buy one.
Everett Well done.I'm glad.Congratulations on the new purchase.
Will Yep, it's done. All right, moving on.What's your next one?
Everett We're in good health. My next watch is a Seiko because it's not possible to make an episode of 40 and 20, the Watch Clicker podcast without talking about Seiko. What we've got here is a 6117 GMT land mechanical, a land mechanical GMT.
Will There's no way that everybody listening has not seen this watch. It was everywhere on Instagram today.
Everett That's right. You've seen this watch. It's fucking epic.Um, yeah.Is that it?Do we need to say anything else about this?
Will Well, you know, I think when people talk about travel watches, they think of a GMT, right? This is what I need to travel.I have to have two time zones.Um, I was once in that boat and I also realized that I don't travel outside my home time zone too much and I'm actually pretty decent at math.Um, so I don't usually travel with GMTs.Um, but I mean, it's, it's what you want from a Seiko reissue. The, it's got the, the, historically accurate branding, I'll call it with the applied logo and the water resistant 10 bar on the bottom. It doesn't have all the prospects, you know, garbage all over it.Um, which like they just did with that.Yeah, which they did. They're starting to do more of, I think, and ditching some of that, um, more modern branding on their reissues.Like they did with that Seiko 5 that they just had a couple months ago, which was a reissue of the first Seiko 5 or whatever it was. Right.Um, but this is, I mean, this'll sell like hotcakes. It's really good looking.Um, it's got there, I'm assuming that's a four R GMT movement in it.It's a six R. Six R. Yeah, yeah, yeah.I was going to say, I wonder if it's upgraded in this.So there you go.Uh, 12.6.
Everett Six R 54.Yep.Okay.It's a pretty thin for a GMT.
Will Can Seiko just stop calling things that are 4,000 pieces a limited edition? It's not.Anybody who wants one can get one.
Everett Right. We joked about this last week about something that I think was limited to like 16,000 pieces. It was like, what?
Will That's how many you're just going to sell.Okay.It's 1,500 bucks, which is what I expect from something like this.
Everett This is not one-to-one of the original. It is very close to the original 6117.But it's not one-to-one.And as it's not one-to-one, I'm going to object to the size of the crown on this thing. If you were really beholden to the source material, you maybe leave the crown the same. But they're clearly making sensical modernizations. And I don't think anybody wants a two and a half millimeter crown in 2023.It's this crown is recessed. These crowns are a pain in the dick to use.Yeah, give me just a little bit more crown. That's my one objection to this watch.
Will It's it's like the crowns on the the freaking the old Seiko SNK's is the tiniest thing that was ever created.
Everett Tiny and terrible.
Will Yeah, I agree with you, especially because Is this a screwing crown?I bet it's not.
Everett I don't think so.No, not at a hundred.
Will Yeah.Which is that's going to be a pain in the butt to wind.
Everett That's right. You know, fortunately you can wind it, but yeah, it's going to be a pain in the butt to wind, especially because it's recessed and it's recessed there at four o'clock.I mean, yeah, it's going to be tough.
Will Yes, it's definitely not screwing.It's got 100 meters of water resistance.That's definitely a push-pull.It's 12.6 thick.It's only 38.5 in diameter.It's good size.Yes.
Everett Not cheap, 1,500, but you get Sapphire. No hard lucks here. They've given you Sapphire. They've given you really good dimensions, 38.5.Look at it this way.
Will If Oris or Uh, geez, who else is kind of that form X or Manta released this watch? It would probably be more than that.So I think the price is fair.
Everett Yeah, because they, I mean, they don't, or us doesn't have access to the, to the six or 54, you know, the only, I think the only company that can compete with this is citizen, uh, which they've just done recently in a thicker watch. So, which is, which is amazing. It's amazing that Seiko is beating Citizen in terms of thickness with their GMT watch right now, but this is a cool release at a reasonable price. It looks like it's going to be super, you know, I assume the quality of the finishing here is going to be comparable to the new King Seikos, which means excellent. You know, it's still, they're still Seiko. So they're beating everybody else at their price. in terms of finishing. The one reservation I would have about this is thickness, but they've done a pretty good job at 12 six.So.Yeah, including the box crystal.
Will Yeah, I was going to say that includes the crystal. So that's not bad.
Everett Yeah. And this looks to be the same.
Will Yeah, I bet the case is almost identical to the.Oh, what was the was a common name for the slim Willard or the slim turtle that came out?I think it was last year. Yeah, I bet you're right.
Everett Yeah, those same. It's that age.
Will Yeah, those those were really nice.So I think this will this will make everybody happy. And the bracelet looks good, too.Not a bogus, crappy oyster bracelet like they used to put on everything that they released.I actually like this. It's kind of flat.Yeah, this Jubilee style.
Everett I agree.I think this bracelet is a good is a good successor to the Seiko's of old, right?
Will Yeah, absolutely.
Everett Well, so I think that would be a good vacation watch. In fact, I think all of the watches we talked about today would be good vacation watches, the Montblanc if you have way too much money. But what started this show today, what started this conversation is you had had some thoughts on your vacation, and I'm curious to hear what those are about what makes a good vacation watch for you.
Will So when I was packing for my vacation, I, this is, this is probably the first vacation that I've taken.Um, since I was in the frame of mind to bring a multiple watches on vacation.Um, because my, my kids are pretty young, so haven't been on a, you know, real big vacation in a while. So this was kind of my first big one in a while. And I was like, I'm going to, I'm going to bring some watches. So I decided to bring four watches.I was going to wear one, bring three in a travel case. And I was picking out my watches, and I always bring my Speedmaster if I go away for a weekend or anything like that.So that was with me.And the three watches that I picked to bring were Formax Essence 39, a Seiko SKX009, and a Christopher Ward C63 Trident, the newer one in 38 millimeters. Now I picked these watches, mostly water resistant watches, because I was like, I'm going to wear my watch in the ocean, in the pool, whatever, you know, I don't care.I'm not going to take it off and, you know, let's swim without a watch. That's weird.Who does that?Uh, so my, my thought was I'm going to bring, um, the, Christopher Ward, that's going to be like my, I'm going to wear that every day to the pool, to the beach.Like that's my, that's my vacation watch. That was how I went into it.And I was like, I probably won't wear anything else. You know, the Speedmaster.Yeah.Yeah.So the, um, the Speedmaster, you know, that'll sit in the safe, you know, maybe I'll wear it to dinner.Uh, and then, you know, the other stuff, if I want to change, you know, that's what I'll wear.So I was gone for a week by the way.So I had plenty of time to, to wear things and, The day we got on the boat, I wore my Speedmaster and then we went to the pool and I put on the Christopher Ward because I was like, this is my vacation watch. And I was wearing it and I found myself not wanting to wear it because I was like, what if I bump it into this? What if I lose it?What if I'm not paying attention?I'm having a bunch of drinks, you know, because we've got the drink package. What if it falls off my wrist? You know, like all these thoughts were going through my head and I was like, this isn't what I should be worried about.I wear my watches everywhere.I don't care if I bang them up.Who gives a crap? And I, you know, I was like, is this just stuff I don't worry about at home, but I do worry about on vacation. So that night I put my Speedmaster back on for dinner. And then the next morning we got up and we went to the pool on the boat and I was like, I don't feel like worrying about it.I'm going to just going to put on my XKX 009. because I really don't care what happens to it.If it gets lost, I can probably buy another one for a couple hundred bucks.I don't think it's going to get lost, but I would feel less bad about it because it's not a thousand dollars. And, um, I wore that.I had it on a, yeah, go ahead.
Everett I don't want to interrupt you.I don't want to interrupt you, but I do want to interrupt you because you were walking through the watches that you took to your cruise. And I, I'm going to tell you something, and you may not believe me, but I went to Seattle this weekend. You believe me about that, I think. But when I went to Seattle, I went with a Speedmaster on my wrist and a watch case with three watches. In that watch case was a blue Formex Essence 39, an SKX007, and a Manta Triumph, which is not the same as a C63 Sealander, but it is I think amongst our collections, as close as you can get.All that to say, I brought the SKX specifically because I didn't know what we were going to do and I thought I may want to have a beater watch that I wouldn't be stressed about. So anyway, keep going.I'm sorry to interrupt your story, but you were talking about this and I was like, that is the funniest thing.
Will I think it's because that's kind of the way you think. Which is the point of this, you know, like that's the stuff that I'm gonna bring on vacation. It all makes sense, right?
Everett So I'm wearing the double nine and if Andrew and I have very different tastes and watches Will you and I I think have similar tastes but different and yet at the end of the day, that's a testament to those watches, right?
Will The format and our our view on contemporary watches I feel is very similar You are on more, I don't want to say vintage, but older stuff, I think we don't have the same… I'm weirder.Yeah, yeah, yeah. You like the weirder stuff, but modern… Modern weird shit, true.Yeah, we're more in line.So anyway, I'm wearing this 009 and I've got it on a Barton silicone, and it was like I finally settled into my vacation.I stopped worrying about what happened to the watch, didn't care, and As the days progressed, one thing that was funny that happened, it was like the fourth or fifth day, I had put on suntan lotion.I had taken my watch off to put on suntan lotion in our room before we were going out.I thought I had put my watch back on.I was very confident that I did.We got to the pool with the kids and I looked down at the time, watch was nowhere to be found.I was like, oh shit. it fell off my wrist or it, I, I, it pulled and the, you know, the spring bar failed and I just didn't realize it because we had the drink package and I had had a few drinks. So I am 100% confident that I lost this watch and I didn't care.I was like, that's why I wore this one because if something happened, I wouldn't get so upset about it.I just went on playing in the pool with the kids.We had an absolute blast. We got back to the room. and I picked up the clothes that I was wearing, I'd put on bathing suit, I picked up the clothes that I was wearing and my watch, the 009 was in the clothes.I had probably went to go put it on, gotten distracted and it just fell on and I forgot all about it.Crisis averted.I think if it had been the Christopher Ward, I probably would have been bugging out. a lot more, I would be like, I got to go back to the room.I got to go, I got to go rechase our steps.I got to go to the lost and found if they even have one and find it.And it like kind of made me think with a travel watch, do I want to, do I want to care as much about it or do I just want to throw something on and forget? And does it, does being cheaper, Yeah, does it being cheaper make that easier?Or is it the fact that I brought so many watches, is that the problem?Because I ended up wearing that almost the entire rest of the time.I think I changed into my Speedmaster one other time for… They have a formal night on the boat.I think that was the only other time I wore it.
Everett Most of the other time it was… You put on your dress watch.
Will Yeah, that's my dress watch. It absolutely is.If you see pictures of me dressed up, it is the Speedmaster. One thing that they forget about with dress watches is that the more expensive it is, the dressier it is.That's definitely how it works. No one tells you that.
Everett A hundred percent.Your story kind of embodies, I think, some of the ideology of the podcast when I think of watch clicker at large, which is that more expensive does not mean necessarily better.Oftentimes it does, But there is a lot of value to be had.You know, I've written essays about the SKX and you've written reviews of the SKX and its progeny. You know, this is one of those watches that is sort of stands on an island. It's incredibly cool.I think, you know, with the SKX5 Sports, it's become more accessible, which, as we all know, you know, I listen to them. before they were famous type of deal. But, you know, this is a great watch, right? The SKX009, there is nothing wrong with that watch. It is just as cool today as it was in 1998 or whatever, right? And you can go out in an SKX, not stress out, and still be wearing a fucking dope watch. If I see someone in an SKX today, I stop them and say, cool watch, right?
Will So the funny thing about it is, is this feels very circle jerky, right? We're like, yeah, the SKX, it's the best watch.Like that's kind of what it sounds like. But to your point, almost every night there is a, a thing, an event on the boat where they're selling watches. They have, they had a boutique on the boat that sold almost everything you could possibly want. They had Omega, Breitling, Tag, Tiso, Oris, they had used Rolexes, which was funny. But I mean, they had all the stuff you would want there, right?I think the only thing that they had Omega, the only thing I didn't see there was Tudor. So they didn't have any Tudors on the boat. But then they have events like… That's weird, right?
Everett That's a weird omission.
Will Yeah, from everything else that's there. The other thing that they do is out in like the main kind of foyer area every night is they they have sales and usually there's Citizen, Boliva.Oh, geez. What was the other one they had there? There's always Invicta, but they didn't have too many of those this time.It was actually Citizen was the big brand they were pushing. It's a good swap.Yeah, absolutely.Every night they would have these things and I would usually go peruse around and just see what they had. I talked to the watch guys there and there were a couple of them that were, that were pretty in tune with, you know, the, the enthusiast space I'll say.And every single one of the people I talked to, even the, the guys that weren't, I would say as enthusiastic about watches as you know, like me and you are, they noticed the SKX and they were like, that is a good looking watch. What is that? And I was like, Oh, it's a SKX 009.It's, you know, I don't know, it's 10 years old, probably something like that.I bought it used a while ago.Um, And they were like, wow, you know, it looks great. And I was like, well, good thing I didn't wear the Speedmaster. You probably wouldn't give a crap, you know? And like, I wonder if that was part of it too, where I'm like, wow, people are noticing my watch. It's the SKX, you know, like mind blown moment.Um, and that's why I mean like, it sounds so circle jerky, but I think that's why that watch has the reputation it has is because it is what it is.It's just good looking. It stands out. It's reliable, like it didn't leak. You know, I had it in the ocean, in the pool, underwater, got smacked around, you know. However old it is, it never had a water intrusion.
Everett You know, the SKX and the 7002, you don't see those very often, but invariably when you see one, people know what they are.So yeah, it is circle jerky, right? That's actually kind of what we do, right? We are unironically a deliberate circle jerk, but that is kind of what it's about. So I love the SKX.I love that you have a 009 because it's a watch that I've always thought about picking up, but never really had the guts or the inclination. It's just a great watch. And to be able to still today, you've had that for a decade, right? To be able to still today just put that watch on, not stress about it, but still be wearing the coolest watch in the room is a testament to maybe not the watch itself, but kind of to what we're doing, I think.I think that was my point in bringing that up.
Will Yeah.Yeah, absolutely. And where it kind of led me down was I tried on a bunch of watches on the boat at the boutique that they had.The guy probably hated me because I never bought anything. but he was very courteous. He let me try on whatever I wanted. It was like, all right, if I was going to do the same vacation again, what would I bring?I actually don't know if it would be the SKX.I think the reason that I put it on and I didn't worry about it was because let go of the worry about it.You know, it's just like, if it gets wet, it'll be fine.If it goes in the pool, it'll be fine.Um, if it gets lost, I will be bummed out, but it won't destroy my life. But I also did enjoy taking it off.And then, you know, usually for dinner, I'd put on the Speedmaster at night. That would, you know, because I was done going in the water and stuff, you know, I don't have to worry about water anymore.Um, And I was like, I should've just brought two watches.I think I over-thunk it.You know, bringing so many watches.
Everett As we are wont to do, right?Yeah. It's funny you say that.I went to Seattle with Speedmaster on my wrist and those three watches that I just said.I wore the Speedmaster the very first day as we got to the place. My friend Phil picked me up at the airport. I was wearing the Speedmaster and I thought, you know what, I'm going to put on the Form X and that watch did not come off my wrist the entire time.So yeah, you're going to put something on.I overthought it.I should have just worn the Form X, but, but yeah, right. You're just going to wear a watch.
Will Yeah. And it's funny you mentioned the, the Form X because, um, I did wear it once on the trip and the only reason I didn't wear it more was because, um,
Everett I the class brought and in your Bahamas and your wrist size is changing.
Will Yeah, yeah, that was that was the problem is I had it on the bracelet and I didn't bring another strap, which if you don't know, you have to buy curved and straps to fit the essence 39.And I probably the bigger ones too, because the locals are so close. So You have to use either Form-X's straps or get one of like, you know, like Deluxe and Veblenus. They make curved end straps that'll fit it.Um, that was the only reason that I only wore it once.
Everett It is the one downside to the Form-X Essence. They've got that like relief valve within the clasp, which is a feat of engineering. It's a little bit tricky, fiddly to use, I'd say, but it doesn't really do what you want it to do.
Will Yeah.Cause if you, if you had sized it in the winter, and then you go somewhere warm, it is not going to fit even with that extension. You have to put a link in and then probably close it.Um, you know, cause it's, it's a, they should just put a regular, yeah, they should put the, the class that they put on the reef on it.That'd be awesome.
Everett That'd be perfect.I agree.
Will But it is gonna, that this essence conversation is going to lead into what we're going to talk about in a minute with the next vacation watch.
Everett Yeah, I want to hear about this.So you put a lot of thought into this.I have also put some thought into this.I'm curious what is so we're both in a position today where we have to pick an ideal vacation watch.I'll explain my thinking on mine when I get to it.But you've explained your thinking. What is your ideal vacation watch and why?
Will So I'm going to stick with what I said in that the next time I go on vacation, I'm bringing two watches.
Everett Okay.I'll accept.
Will Okay. Now in all likelihood, it is probably going to be SKX and the Speedmaster because I bring my, like my Speedmaster is my sentimental watch. It comes with me on things that are going to have, you know, like a life memory because Um, for anybody who doesn't know, I'll keep this very short.Uh, my wife got me that watch when we got married. So that's like the watch that, you know, I wear for like family pictures and that's why it's my dress watch and all that kind of jazz.Right?Anyway, I digress.
Everett Now let's say that I'm not going to bring the Speedmaster.I don't think you do digress. You've got, you've got two watches, right? You've got an Oris Aquus and a Speedmaster that will never leave your collection. And I don't think I'm missing any.Is that right?
Will That's correct.
Everett I've got two watches, the SKX because it was my first watch and I'm just absolutely enamored and in love with that watch and my Speedmaster because I got hit by it.These are important things, right?
Will These are important things.
Everett Absolutely.I got hit by a car.I bought a Speedmaster.Uh, so, so it's good.That's a, that's a, I don't, I don't think that's a digression.I appreciate you telling us.
Will So I'm either going to ditch one of two watches, right? If I'm going to go on vacation to make room. for this watch, I'm either going to ditch the Speedmaster or ditch the SKX.Now, the watch that I've picked, I think could fill the void for either one.So if I decide that I'm not going to bring the SKX because, hey, it's getting old. What if it does get a water intrusion, right? This would still hold up in the pool, I think, as long as I don't leave the crown popped out, because I'm 99% sure this does have a push-pull crown. It is, and you'll know, I'm going to put my money where my mouth is, the Tag Heuer Carrera, caliber 5, 39 millimeter.
Everett Dope.
Will So for anybody who doesn't know, this is the I'd say that the classic tag watch, that's not a diver. It's got a black dial, stylized baton markers with slightly skeletonized hands. It's tag sports watch, right? This could fit into anything.
Everett That's right. This is the Aqua Terra or the Monte Triumph or whatever, right?
Will Or the Form X Essence without all the annoyingness of the bracelet.Um, now that I, this does not have an adjustable clasp, so that's the one downside to it, but you can put any strap you want on it.That's the difference.I can, I can go put my $20, you know, strap on it if I want to.Um, so it does have a hundred meters of water resistance.Um, it'll be fine in the pool. I don't think that this is going to have a water intrusion problem, anything like that.I have gotten my Speedmaster, which has, what, 50 meters of water resistance?30?I don't even know.Dunked under pool-level water and it has been fine.I'm pretty sure this will be fine with 100 meters.
Everett It'll be fine. It'll be fine.I'm not worried about it.I'm also upset if it's not.
Will Exactly, right?
Everett Will, have you seen I'm sure you've seen this. This watch, if you go to the Tag Heuer website, I'm going to put a link to this in the show notes, but have you seen the animation on the first image of this watch on the Tag Heuer website?
Will Oh, where it displays the current time and date and then it ticks away?
Everett Yeah.So it goes to… Yeah.
Will Tag Heuer's website is wonderful. If you have not perused their website and just looked at their watches and the webpages that they build for them, you need to because every watch, it'll take up almost your entire screen and it'll display the current time and date on the watch and it'll tick with the correct frequency. It's not like a Grand Seiko smooth sweep. It's actually ticking at four hertz. You can see it.
Everett This is insane. What the fuck is this?
Will Yeah.So definitely go look at it. Dude, this is what I mean.
Everett October 3rd, 708.This is I've got it doesn't say I've got it in my three.
Will Yeah, it's just go ahead.Yeah.On my time, it's like perfect right now because it's 1008 right now.
Everett So it looks really good. That is insane.I've never seen this before.
Will Yeah, it's really cool.
Everett So this is your ultimate vacation watch.
Will I think it is because, all right, so here's the other thing.I thought for sure I was going to be using a timing bezel.I didn't use it once.I didn't touch the damn thing.
Everett Of course not.
Will This is what I mean, like I was overthinking it.I was overthinking things so much and it's like, I just need to keep it simple. And what more is a, I've been overthinking it, I need to keep it simple watch than a Tag Carrera.
Everett Will, am I allowed to say that you've just purchased this watch?Did you already say that?
Will Uh, I didn't, but I did say I'm putting my money where my mouth is.So.
Everett So you, you send us, so I regularly, so we've got a group chat.I regularly send watches to the group chat and say, thinking about buying this. And I sometimes buy it like six months later.Yeah.You send a link and say, I'm thinking about buying this. And then you say like within 20 minutes, did it. Which is not to say you buy all that many watches.I think you buy more watches than I do, but not by a wide margin. You're just like, you figure it out and you pull the trigger.
Will Yeah.I do all the, I do all the research behind the scenes and then I tell everybody about it.
Everett This is a phenomenal watch.Tell me why you get this versus an Aqua Terra.
Will Uh, I don't like the hands on the Aqua Terra. It is the one killer for that watch for me.If they gave it different hands, I hate that arrow hand.I know it's in the Seamaster line and I think that's kind of what they're going for.It doesn't fit.I think that's Omega's problem with the Seamaster in general, like the regular Seamaster, the Planet Ocean and the Aqua Terra. Their hands are all goofy, like do some different hands. Also, the Aqua Terra is significantly pricier.I think for what you're getting and going for, I think the tag beats it out in that value proposition column.
Everett Yes, I knew an Aqua Terra is what, like four to five, right?
Will I think their MSRP is like six now.I think they're crazy.
Everett Yes, an MSRP might be six.I've got one on Joma right now for $45.95, but yes, that tracks.
Will You can get the Carrera for, I'll just say 20% to 30% off MSRP, which is significantly less than an Aqua Terra.
Everett That's from Joma Shop or whatever, right?
Will AD.You can get pretty decent discounts. Yeah. That's good.Yeah.Dude, those new 38 millimeter Aqua Terras that have the planar dials, the non-pattern dials that are in the fun colors.
Everett The non-teak.
Will They are 6,600 MSRP, and I bet probably from an AD, probably five, I would say.
Everett Yeah.On a bracelet?Yeah.I mean, Crown & Caliber used 4,500.Yeah.Yeah.It's more.
Will Yeah. And I don't like that minute hand.I love the rest of the watch.I love the, I don't mind the pattern dial.I would, you know, I would probably get the pattern dial.I love the markers.I love the applied logo on those, the bracelet.I wish it didn't have polished center links, but it's not that bad.
Everett Um, no, the polish center links are dope.Come on, come on.
Will Well, that's what I like about the tag is it's got that mix of brushed and polished. It's not over the top.
Everett Yeah. Yeah, you've got like almost every other right?
Will Yeah, yeah.
Everett Yeah, great.I'm here for it, buddy.I think it's a great pick.I'm excited about it.I want to see it in person.
Will I've got to come out to wind up.
Everett I know, man, we're not going to make it this year.I'm not going to this year. You're going to be there, though, right?
Will Yeah, I will be there on Friday this year.I'm doing a week day day trip.
Everett So if you want to see me, if you're Friday, if you're in New York, slide into the DMS, will the watch clicker will be at wind up New York.
Will Yeah.I've got my, I've got my COVID out of the way, so I'm good to go.
Everett I picked a, I picked an ultimate vacation watch.Uh, you, you, you would kind of challenged me.I picked an ultimate vacation watch.I haven't sent you the link, so you don't know what I'm about to say. which I like, I like that.Um, I had a, I had a rubric and which is to say I had some things I wanted.Like I said, when I went to Seattle this week, I wore the form X essence.I easily, in fact, that moment we were at the parking lot of the water taxi.I had my speedy on and I knew I didn't want to wear my speedy. I pulled open my watch case, I had the SKX, and I thought, eh.I pulled out the Formex, I pulled out the Manta, and I went with the Formex, and it was purely just a gut.Any other day I might have gone with the Manta, probably a coin flip between the Manta and the Formex.I put on the Formex, and that's what I wore, and I was super happy with that. It's Seattle, right? So it's not the Bahamas. We're not getting humidity. So the Formex was fine. I will say the Manta would have been better in a human climate, but I wasn't there. So I put the 4MX on, felt great. And I think I have some realizations about what I wanted a travel watch.I want it to be sexy.First and foremost, a travel watch, I want it to be sexy. And you might say, well, that's true all the time.I don't think for me, that's true all the time. When I'm traveling, I want to watch… Sexy, to me, speaks versatility, right? So I could go to dinner, feel good.I could, you know, put on a jacket, feel good.I could go to a baseball game and feel good.So I want it to be sexy, but I also want it to be sporty.I want it to be on a metal bracelet.I know you talked about wearing your SKX on a Barton and just having a strap in general.I want a metal bracelet. And whether that means it needs to be adjustable or not, I don't know, but I do want a metal bracelet.I want it to be thin, thin.I want a thin watch.I really like both the Formex and the Manta for that steel sports watch because they are so thin. Both of those come in at well under 10, and that is what I want.If you're over 10, forget about it.
Will Bye-bye, PRX.
Everett That's right.Bye-bye PRX.Give me a Certina DS7 all day.But that's not my pick.I decided to go the opposite direction of you.Well, maybe not the opposite, but I decided to go big.I've got a watch. This is my ultimate vacation watch.I am going to go with the Piaget Polo S. Okay. This is a bizarre pick, but I'm going to defend it.So this is a nine and a half millimeter sport watch with the option to put on a regular old strap. It is sexy as shit.
Will All right, hold on.So which one?
Everett Okay.I'm going to go with the standard 42 millimeter blue dial Piaget Polo S. Steel case.Steel case. This is the one if you go to the PSJA website, they come in at $14,400.You can find these all day in brand new condition for under $10,000, sometimes as low as $7,000, depending on where you go.This is not a cheap watch, but it is sporty. When this came out, I think in 2016, it got a lot of flack because it is clearly derivative. Now, it bears mentioning that I think the original Piaget Apollo was released within years of the Nautilus, right? This is one of the players at the beginning, right? This is not Piaget coming in in 2016 and stealing somebody else's thunder.Piaget has been a player. The reason I like Piaget is because it's not AP, it's not Patek, and I don't think that everybody's going to know what this is, which I like.
Will And you can actually buy it right now, this second.Correct, from Piaget.
Everett Yeah. That's right. That's right. But maybe don't buy this from Piaget unless you really want to have that experience.Don't buy it from the website for sure, but if you want to go to an AD, feel free. This is a luxurious, sexy watch, but it's big enough and sporty enough that it could dress down easily. If you're a little person, I'm not a little person. If you're a little person, I don't know if this is going to work because of the size, but it's similar to the Carrera. You've got a blend of polish and brush. You've got a big kind of fuck you bezel on this thing. This is going to do everything I want on vacation. Now to your point, your earlier point, am I going to stress out about this thing?I don't think so.I've got great insurance, right? You know, if I lost my Speedmaster today or if it was stolen or damaged, I'd pay a $500 deductible and USA pays for the rest.Um, and so am I going to stress out about this if I'm on vacation?I don't think so.Uh, this is the watch I want on vacation for me.I think Pick one watch, unlimited budget.I'm going with the Piaget Polo S. You've got, it's not a teak dial. The teak dial is, you know, a proprietary term, but it's very similar to what I would call a teak dial. You've got the horizontal grooves, but it's just tipped.
Will Yo, can I just say, this thing slaps on the rubber strap.
Everett Oh yeah.
Will Oh yeah.Yeah. That is nice. That's what the Bray phenomenal to you want to take that bracelet off for a minute.
Everett That's right. And with the rubber, because this is I don't believe this is a highly adjustable clasp. So if you're worried about that at all, rubber is fantastic. And the stock rubber, the OEM rubber is perfect.Mm hmm. This is it.This is my vacation watch. Because I mean, realistically, do I want a Nautilus more than I want this?Yes.Can I ever buy a Nautilus? No.
Will Yeah, this, well, it's, it's attainable.
Everett I mean, this is attainable.
Will That's right. Is it very, very expensive?Yes, it certainly is, but maybe some good bonuses at work for a couple of years and maybe your kids get a scholarship to college and yeah, you're in.
Everett That's right. That's right. It's not so unattainable that you're like, forget about it, right?Which for me, the Nautilus is.You look at Nautilus prices and it's like, yeah, it's actually just never going to happen. This doesn't feel like that. This is a little bit more than a Speedmaster.
Will Yeah.
Everett Which you and I both own.
Will Right.
Everett This is it for me.
Will You had to get run over by a car and I had to get married.
Everett That's right. And you know, furthermore, I get this.I probably get rid of the Manta.I probably get rid of something else.Like this watch does so many things in my collection.
Will Yeah.
Everett So yeah, for me, this is it.This is the one.If you want this in a chronograph, you can do that by the way.
Will Yeah.That chronograph is a little bonkers.Uh, it's only 9.5.I don't love the two.Yeah.
Everett Yeah, they've done it.I mean, it's the same thing, but I'm just going to throw this out there. This is the same thickness as the Sertina.Yeah, it's probably a little nicer.
Will Probably just a little smidge.
Everett Yeah, I mean, the handset on this, the markers, the dial. This is a gorgeous watch. This is the watch I want on vacation.
Will I love this pick, definitely.
Everett But in lieu of this, I'll continue to wear the Formax and the Manta.
Will Mm-hmm.As you should.
Everett Will, other things, what do you got?
Will I've got a tool today. Now, I never know how to say this brand the right way, so I'll just say it, and then I'll spell it, and someone can correct me later, and I'll keep saying it the way I want. But the Nypex, so K-N-I-P-E-X, I'm sure most people are familiar with that brand.
Everett I'm familiar.
Will Yep.So the Nypex 10-inch pliers wrench with the ergonomic grip. These things are probably the single best hand tool I have bought in the past five years. So this looks like your standard pair of adjustable pliers, right? It's got a jaw that opens pretty wide, nice looking grip on them. The kicker about this thing is it's got two things. One is it's got this little push button to actually adjust the jaws so it locks into place so it's not sliding around on you if you open it up too wide.
Everett Like crescents.
Will Yeah, or any other of the Home Depot Lowe's brands adjustable wrenches that you buy.But this has a… built-in I'll just call it a ratcheting action because I don't know what else to call it so you open it up to what you need to you lock it in and let's say you're gonna tighten down a nut or something right you squeeze you turn you open it a little bit and it opens a small it doesn't just swing out it opens a set amount and allows you to pull it back up close it again and keep going to tighten so it it ratchets in a way.You don't have to open it up very wide and allow you to keep going. It is, it is so versatile that it is the tool that I now keep like in my tool bag all the time.I've got, um, you know, like a couple of screwdrivers, uh, power drill and tape measure and these things like it is essential. Now you pay for it.It's expensive.Um, I mean for, If you compare it to, uh, you know, another adjustable wrench, it is probably six, seven times the price.I think it's like 60, 70 bucks, something like that. It's expensive. But this is one of those tools that you cry once and you're never buying another one.I think this will last you for the rest of your life.
Everett Yeah. So, so I would say NipX, I'm fine with NipX.Uh, NipX is one of these brands that you see in a lot of people's EDCs. And I think if you're like me, you're like, why would I carry a pair of pliers in my everyday carry? And when I say you see these in people, it's EDCs.That is if you.
Will Are the type of person that like the yeah, they make those.I've seen them. They make those little like four inch pliers.I see those pop up like YouTube all the time. This is not that this is like a home tool type thing.
Everett Right.I think they actually make these in like four, five, six, seven. So you can you can really get whatever you want. But this is one of those tools that you see coming up repeatedly in people's.And it's like, well, do I want do I need that?Probably not.But if I do need that, this is what everybody seems to like. Are they Swiss made, I think, or are they German?I think it's
Will German.Yeah, they're German.
Everett It's one of the two.Uh, yeah, that's, that's a great pick. And in fact, I'm a little bummed that you beat me to it.Cause this is one of those things that I've got on my like list.I should get one of those one day and talk about it on the show.Uh, yeah.Cool.
Will Yeah.
Everett And sexy, right?Like, like this is, Oh, have you seen my tool?
Will Yeah. It's one of those tools you use it and you're like, Oh, It's so satisfying.Like you want to find a situation to use it.
Everett Right. So are the ten inch.So you said the ten inch, right?
Will Yeah.So just if if you're going to buy one pair, get the ten inch.Don't get one of the smaller ones.If I think they have like a combo where you get like a ten inch and a six inch.I would. I would opt for the 10 inch if you're only going to buy one.I can't think of a situation myself in which I would need different sizes unless you're doing a lot of, you know, work around pipes and, you know, plumbing, that sort of stuff.I don't do any of that except for like changing a faucet. So the 10 inch is what I would go for if you're looking for kind of that universal version.
Everett You know, my father-in-law is a plumber and so he's given me a dozen pair over the years of channel lock 440s.I've got probably, I mean, literally a dozen pair of 440s or channel locks in my, in my collection will be at the 426 or the 440s or the 420s.I think channel lock has for a long time been the standard for plumbers.
Will I have a lot of channel lock, like smaller pliers, wire cutters, needle nose pliers.I have a lot of channel lock stuff.
Everett You know, and I think channel locks are almost all still made in the USA.It's a great company. But when you look at a company like Nipax that is doing, they're just moving the needle, but they're doing it in a way.So what I hate is when tools are, when they concentrate on functionality, but they ignore form, right?I still want my tools to be sexy.I, I don't want like integrated modular ergonomic rubber grips that have like cutouts and you know, like these just have simple dipped rubber handles, incredibly well machined.Uh, you know, it's, I assume this is like, cast or maybe a forged tool.Uh, you know, these are sexy.I'm into it.
Will I'm into it.They're really nice.I highly recommend them.
Everett Cool.I've got another thing.Well, my other thing for the week is also a tool, a little less butch.Okay.My other thing for the week is a, it's a tea kettle. My wife says to me recently, Hey, I want a tea kettle.Should I go to TJ Maxx or should I let you pick this?I'm afraid if I just go get something, you're going to hate it.And I said to her, that's true.I'll take care of it. I purchased a tea kettle from a company that makes enameled cookware called La Croissette. It's a French company. They make enameled Dutch ovens, famous, very expensive. They make a tea kettle that is basically the tops of every tea kettle rating that you can find online. It seems like a weird thing to need to go to Wirecutter.A tea kettle is a pretty simple thing. But I found this thing, I fell in love with it, and then I Googled it to make sure it wasn't stupid, right?Because I think that's easy to do, right?I found this thing, it looks right, I want it, but maybe it's not good. And I Googled it, and everyone was like, yeah, this thing is fantastic. So I purchased the, just quickly, the LaCrousette Enamel Whistling Tea Kettle 1.7 quart. It's terrific.Look, it's a tea kettle. You put water in it, you stick it on the stove, you boil it, it whistles, you take it off. What color did you get?In terms of function, I went with flame.
Will Of course you did.
Everett And the reason I went with flame is because, which is like an orange, I've got other orange enameled stuff in my kitchen. So it… Well, it's on brand. It's on brand. That's right. they didn't have a blue and orange.Well, I'm sorry.
Will I know we can paint one.
Everett So I've used this thing.
Will You know what you do?You buy the deep tell me and the flame and you take the lid off one and you put it on the lid.
Everett Done.Or maybe I go with the Caribbean.
Will All right. So here's what I'm going to do.I'm going to buy the you're right. And we're going to we're going to swap. We're going to swap lids.
Everett So I'll send you the orange lid.You send me the the deep.
Will Yeah, yeah.Yep.
Everett There we go.Done. Done.Yeah, this is terrific.
Will We have an electric tea kettle.I think it's KitchenAid is probably the one that Wirecutter would recommend. It does what it's supposed to.It's easy to clean. It heats up well.It does all the stuff that you need it to.I have not used a stovetop tea kettle in God knows how long, probably since I lived with my parents.
Everett You know, I understand people in Europe use electric tea kettles like all the time.
Will So that, and I thought, that's where we figured out that that's the one we wanted to buy when we were on our honeymoon.Uh, we stayed at like a boutique hotel that, you know, like you did your own stuff if you wanted tea. And, uh, that's the one that they had.And my wife was like, I love this thing. So when we got home, I bought one.
Everett Yeah, and it makes so much sense, right? You put it in the thing, you turn it on, it makes hot water. There's something, we're all here because we're traditionalists in a certain sense.I considered that.I eventually decided I want something that sits on the stove. It's part of the decor and it's more traditional, but I was partially inclined to go electric tea kettle.
Will You know what? Now that I'm thinking about it, I lie.No, I didn't use it, but at my last house, we had a wood-burning stove.Oh, yeah.I had a kettle that you put water in to humidify the room when the stove was on.It would have fit in well if we swapped lids.It was a dark blue color.Yeah, missed the opportunity there.Wish I knew you then.
Everett Totally missed the opportunity. Well, here we are. We've talked about the perfect vacation watch. We've talked about tea kettles. We've talked about the best, the best adjustable pliers.Uh, anything else you want to add before we go?
